About The Hague

Den Haagpronounced [dɛn ˈɦaːx] (About this sound listen), short for ‘s-Gravenhage[ˈsxraːvə(n)ˌɦaːɣə] (About this sound listen)) is a city on the western coast of the Netherlands and the capital of the province of South Holland.

With a population of more than 1 million including the suburbs, it is the third-largest city in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Area, with a population of approximately 2.7 million, is the 12th-largest in the European Union and the most populous in the country. Located in the west of the Netherlands, The Hague is in the centre of the Haaglanden conurbation and lies at the southwest corner of the larger Randstad conurbation.

The Hague is the seat of the cabinet of the Netherlands, the States General, the Supreme Court, and the Council of State, but the city is not the capital of the Netherlands, which constitutionally is Amsterdam.[8] Most foreign embassies in the Netherlands and 150 international organisations are located in the city, including the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, which makes The Hague one of the major cities hosting the United Nations, along with New York CityGenevaViennaRome, and NairobiKing Willem-Alexander lives in Huis ten Bosch[9][a] and works at the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague, together with Queen Máxima. The Hague is also home to the world headquarters of Royal Dutch Shell and numerous other major Dutch companies.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

(IATAAMSICAOEHAM), known informally as Schiphol (DutchLuchthaven SchipholDutch pronunciation: [ˈlʏxtˌɦaːvə(n) ˌsxɪpˈɦɔl]), is the main international airport of the Netherlands. It is located 9 kilometres (5.6 miles)[4] southwest of Amsterdam, in the municipality of HaarlemmermeerNorth Holland. It is the third busiest airport in Europe in terms of passengers. The airport is built as a single-terminal concept: one large terminal split into three large departure halls.

Schiphol is the hub for KLM and its regional affiliate KLM Cityhopper as well as for Corendon Dutch AirlinesMartinairTransavia and TUI fly Netherlands. The airport also serves as a European hub for Delta Air Lines and Jet Airways and as a base for EasyJetSmall Planet Airlines and Vueling.

Schiphol opened on 16 September 1916 as a military airbase. The end of the First World War also saw the beginning of civilian use of Schiphol Airport and the airport eventually lost its military role completely. By 1940, Schiphol had four asphalt runways at 45-degree angles. The airport was captured by the German military that same year and renamed Fliegerhorst Schiphol. The airport was destroyed through bombing but at the end of the war the airfield was restored quickly. In 1949, it was decided that Schiphol was to become the primary airport of the Netherlands. The airport’s official English name, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, reflects the original Dutch word order (Luchthaven Schiphol).
